Microchips, Scanning, and lost equines

Post by Wensmum »

Since 2009 it has been a requirement for all equines to be microchipped. Nobody is obliged to scan for microchips. There is a petition running -Introduce Compulsory Scanning for microchips by vets, rescues and authorities - which is due to finish shortly. In the case of equines we would look for them to be scanned when attended by a vet (as the vet should be entering treatment on the passport, so should scan and check chip number corresponds), going through auctions, or if found straying. Please would you all sign it and get your family and friends to do so too, to make it law to scan. Don't forget to confirm your email address when they email you. We are also aware that there are many police forces using Halo Scanners to scan found horses and those involved in RTAs. We are trying to ensure that people with microchipped animals are aware that it increases the chance of being reunited with a lost or stolen chipped animal if they are registered with the database to which Halo scanners are linked. All animals registered with Petlog are; all animals registered with Doglost (a free database assisting the reunification of all animals now, not just dogs!) are; animals not on either of these data bases can be entered on the database for the Halo Scanner though this link - http://www.scannerangel.com/en/lostanimal.html
Thank you for your help and support
