The National Equine Database (NED) is a unique database that contains information about every equine born or resident in the United Kingdom with a UK passport, and will for the first time, tell us about the nature of the British horse population. Everyone with a horse will have a reason to look at NED.
NED contains an equine record for every passport issued by a UK Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO), which contains the name of the horse, its age, gender, height, colour, sire and dam (where provided).
These basic details are available for you to view free of charge.
Once you have identified the equine you would like to look at, you will have the option of performing a variety of functions which include producing reports on pedigree, performance, grading and evaluations.
NED is the place to find information on over a million horses.
Providing data from official UK sources, NED can help you...
• Search for horses and check passport details
• Look up pedigree & progeny
• Research performance and evaluation results
• Link up with your own horses, add information and a photo
• Flag up lost, stolen or missing horses
• Select and follow your favourite horses
• With specialist reports for business users

Passport Issuing Organisations with a studbook (Breed Societies)
- If you know the breeding of your horse, then it is possible that he may have been registered with the appropriate breed society. Providing his owners have transferred the ownership papers over when he was sold then the society should be able to track his history.
Competition Disciplines
- It is worth contacting affiliated clubs such as the B.S.J.A., British Dressage and Endurance GB to see if they have records of your horse. Also try ringing the local pony clubs and riding schools (in the known area) as they tend to know who's had what horse's sold to where by whom etc.
If you know your horse's passport number, competition/show/stud name, freezemark number or microchip number then this is the website to check out first.
Registering an account is free and will enable you to perform basic searches. Anything more may cost you "points" which you have to buy before hand.
It might not tell you where exactly your horse is but if you hit lucky and find the correct horse, you can see which passport issuing authority added your horse's details to NED and then go from there as to contacting them with a view to finding more information out.
What will NED show if a horse has died ?
If the owner has informed the passport organisation that the horse has died, and then the passport people update their records and in turn NED ... it will show this
If the owner hasn't informed the passport people, then the passport will still show as horse being alive.Date of Birth 01-Jan-1992, Reported Deceased
