National Equine Database

National Equine Database - http://www.nedonline.co.uk

The National Equine Database (NED) is a unique database that contains information about every equine born or resident in the United Kingdom with a UK passport, and will for the first time, tell us about the nature of the British horse population. Everyone with a horse will have a reason to look at NED.

NED contains an equine record for every passport issued by a UK Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO), which contains the name of the horse, its age, gender, height, colour, sire and dam (where provided).

These basic details are available for you to view free of charge.

Once you have identified the equine you would like to look at, you will have the option of performing a variety of functions which include producing reports on pedigree, performance, grading and evaluations.
NED is the place to find information on over a million horses.

Providing data from official UK sources, NED can help you...

• Search for horses and check passport details
• Look up pedigree & progeny
• Research performance and evaluation results
• Link up with your own horses, add information and a photo
• Flag up lost, stolen or missing horses
• Select and follow your favourite horses
• With specialist reports for business users

NED Data Suppliers

This link shows a list of Organisations and Associations that have been authorised to issue horse passports in the UK (i.e. equine studbook societies that have been recognised under Commission Decision 92/353/EEC)

Link to NED Data Suppliers - http://www.nedonline.co.uk/public/DataSuppliers.aspx

This link has upto date name, address, email address and telephone numbers for the categories of PIO below.

Passport Issuing Organisations with a studbook (Breed Societies)
  • If you know the breeding of your horse, then it is possible that he may have been registered with the appropriate breed society. Providing his owners have transferred the ownership papers over when he was sold then the society should be able to track his history.
Passport Issuing Organisations without a studbook

Competition Disciplines
  • It is worth contacting affiliated clubs such as the B.S.J.A., British Dressage and Endurance GB to see if they have records of your horse. Also try ringing the local pony clubs and riding schools (in the known area) as they tend to know who's had what horse's sold to where by whom etc.
Why should I check the NED first ?

If you know your horse's passport number, competition/show/stud name, freezemark number or microchip number then this is the website to check out first.

Registering an account is free and will enable you to perform basic searches. Anything more may cost you "points" which you have to buy before hand.

It might not tell you where exactly your horse is but if you hit lucky and find the correct horse, you can see which passport issuing authority added your horse's details to NED and then go from there as to contacting them with a view to finding more information out.

What will NED show if a horse has died ?

If the owner has informed the passport organisation that the horse has died, and then the passport people update their records and in turn NED ... it will show this
Date of Birth 01-Jan-1992, Reported Deceased
If the owner hasn't informed the passport people, then the passport will still show as horse being alive.

Sorry, NED Online is no longer available

DEFRA's contract with the National Equine Database Ltd (NED) finished at the end of September 2012 and DEFRA have given notice that they are not awarding a new contract for a central equine database. Therefore, the NEDOnline website could not continue to operate and all NED Services including horse search, lost and stolen register, horse associations, pedigree, progeny and performance reports, passport check, NEDLinks and equine reminders are no longer available.

If you have any questions about horse passports these should be directed to Defra. Contact details can be found at: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/horses/

Please note that this does NOT affect the National Equine Crime Database (NECD) which is a seperate and independent organisation.

The NED Team would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to our users for all your support.

Wishing you all a very happy and horsey future.

The NED Team
