Flu

* Similar to cold
* Shivering

* Raised temperature

Caused by a virullent virus
Treatment
* Vet (can be vaccinated)
* Antibiotics
* Treat as for cold
* Light diet
* Contagious - avoid contact, isolation procedure
Must be vaccinated to do affiliated competition
* 1st - whenever
* 2nd - 6 weeks after 1st
* 3rd - 6 months after 2nd
* Annually
Tet-tetanus toxoid given if bad injury
Biennial booster combined with flu jab
Flu-tet, flu, flu-tet, flu
Mud Fever
Causes – Bacteria entering the superficial layers of the skin
Symptoms – The hair appears matted and tufted and will come out if pulled gently
Treatment – Remove the excess hair from the area, dress with an antibiotic ointment and keep the area as dry as possible
Treatment Of Minor Wounds
- Restrain horse - bridle, foreleg, twitch, send someone to check tetanus
- Stop bleeding - pressure, cold hose
- Examine wound after cleaning up, bathe it, clip away any hair
- If only tiny scratch do not dismiss it, examine carefully
If in doubt, call the vet

Do not work
Make feeds palatable
Bonjela for teething youngsters
Types of Wounds
Contused - bruise (kick) - vet ??
Lacerated - rip/tear (wire) - vet ??
Incised - deep clean cut (knife) - vet !!!
Puncture - small entry deep penetration (thorn/nail) - vet !!
