Clipping

Clipping

Reasons for clipping

* Stop horse getting hot and sweaty
* Maintain condition
* Appearance
* Work the horse longer and faster
* Labour saving on grooming
* To prevent skin disease

Done in October then every approx every 6 weeks until 1st January.

There are different types of clippers available to use: - electric and battery powered available in various makes and sizes and hand-powered clippers, but these are not used today.

Types of Clip

Blanket - Neck and belly off. Legs on

Trace - A diagonal line from the ear and shoulder down towards the sheath.

Hunter - Everything off apart from legs and saddle patch.

Bib (gullet) - Chest and possibly girth area off

Full - Everything off.

Clipping Checks

The horse has to be dry, clean and well groomed and tied up. If the horse is to have a full or hunter clip a blanket is needed.

The stable should have the bed up. If the floor is slippery it may be necessary to change stables. The water buckets should be removed.

The reactions of the horse, to the sound of the clippers, should be noted and the appropriate action taken.

The blades should be sharp and at the correct tautness. The clippers should be brushed and well oiled.

An extension lead should be available. A circuit breaker MUST always be used. This is in case the fuse blows or there is a surge of power.

If the horse is out, don't trim the whiskers and feathers. If the horse is showing, do trim the whiskers and feathers.

The horse's feathers help to prevent mud fever. If the horse has mud fever, it is better to clip the feathers off so as to be able to treat the infection.

Trimming

A mane is trimmed to thin it out, improve its appearance and to make it easier to plait. This is done by using a small mane / tail comb. You backcomb the mane, twist a few strands of hair round the mane comb and then pull.

The length of a tail can be trimmed using scissors. You should never cut it shorter than above its hock level. Brush the tail through, down to the bottom, bring it up and then cut in a straight line.

Feather are trimmed using a normal mane comb, combing from underneath and working upwards.
