What to do if your horse gets stolen or goes missing whilst on loan ?

Post by TracingEquines »

Would you know what to do if your horse got stolen? ... or who to contact if your horse got sold whilst on loan?

Act immediately. The first 24 to 48 hours can be critical in leading to the recovery of your horse. Don't delay.

Have a good hunt around your yard, stables and fields, making notes of anything that looks remotely different or strange, such as tyre tracks in fields, hoof prints in fields, skid marks of hooves in fields, gates done up differently etc.
Some horses stolen have been reported to be found in ditches or undergrowth in fields very close to their yard so have a good look around.

Number 1 - Police

Report the theft to the police
Make sure you get a crime reference number
--- Don't be fobbed off with "we'll give you one tomoro" etc. The quicker you get this number, the quicker we can help

Number 2 - Horsewatch

Inform your local Horsewatch area
--- If you don't know who to contact, get in touch with me

Number 3 - Stolen Horse Register

Get your stolen horse details and photo added to the Stolen Horse Register (central database containing all stolen horse details from UK etc)
Send them a clear photo of your horse as well, preferably one untacked showing all markings.
--- This database is searched by all horsewatch co-ordinators regularly for new entries

Number 4 - Missing or Sold whilst on Loan (optional)

If your horse has been sold whilst on loan, please contact Missing Horses on Loan (MHOL) as they may be able to help you by finding out more information and hopefully trace your horse's whereabouts

Number 5 - Forums and Social Media

There is a list of 9 other forums here that you could post the details on - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15

Ideally, you need to post a copy of the Stolen Horse Register entry and include a couple of clear photos, showing any white face markings and any white leg markings clearly. Then post a personal message about your horse and include details such as quirks, vices, habits etc.

Make sure you have included crime reference number or police incident number, freezemark number and microchip number where applicable
*** this also applies when posting on facebook ***

It might be an idea to set up a facebook group and ask people to join. Keep the privacy setting to Public or Open so people can read the messages and see the photos. This makes it easier for people to share the photos as well.

A facebook page is ok but facebook themselves have limited how many people see the posts and photos and you need to rely on other people spreading the word to boost the viewing numbers up

Number 6 - Documents

Contact your Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO), freezemark company and microchip company so they can put a stop on any requested changes and flag the details for duplicate entries.

Gather together all your paperwork and photos that you may need to help identify your horse and to prove ownership ...
- Receipt of purchase
- Bill of sale
- Registration papers (passport)
- Brand and other identification certificates (such as freezemark/microchip)
- Health records/certificates
- The best and clearest colour photos you have available showing the horse from front, back, near side, off side (preferably untacked and showing all white markings on face and legs)

Other things to try

Fliers around your local area asking people if they have seen anything
Contact local newspaper, radio station and TV station to see if they will cover the story
