Police warning after horse trapped in mud put down

By Pam McClounie

A horse that got stuck in quicksand-like mud had to be destroyed.

Police have urged owners to take care after the incident at Castlerigg, near Keswick.

Though the 25-year-old animal was rescued, it had to be put down for medical reasons.

The trapped horse's owner, a 20-year-old woman, from Keswick, stayed with it for almost two hours until it could be released.

“The experience was terrifying and heart-breaking. Sam went straight down and under.

"There was mud everywhere and every time he moved it sucked him back down. It wouldn’t let him go.

“I’ve been riding for around 15 years and have never had a drama. I didn’t see any signs and didn’t realise it was so boggy," she said.

Pc Alan Taylor said incidents such as this - which happened on March 7 - could be avoided by sticking to dry paths and walkways, checking routes on foot first and not going into flooded, wet, or muddy areas or taking unnecessary risks.

“If you are unable to avoid the route ensure the horse walks, avoid trotting or cantering. Even slipping or falling can risk the horse through strains, ligament or tendon damage. At the least there is the inconvenience of a pulled shoe.

“If your horse does become stuck in mud, dismount and let go of the reins, but only if it is safe to do so. Most horses can free themselves from boggy situations," he added.

Anyone who sees a horse stuck in mud should call the RSPCA emergency line on 0300 1234999.

Cumbria Police join Farm Watch operation

Cumbria Constabulary and their colleagues from Durham, Northumbria, North Yorkshire, and Cleveland joined in a Farm Watch operation on Thursday 22nd May 2014.

This was the second major Farm Watch operation of the year, with nearly 150 volunteers taking part.

In Cumbria, there were 27 volunteers from the community, five special constables volunteered their time, two police officers, two police community support officers, and the local sergeant who made up the Cumbria response.

The vast amount of support resulted in very few incidents or crimes being reported across the five forces areas, with a number of stop checks done throughout the night.

PCSO Gemma Threlkeld, who was involved in the operation, said: “It was a really good night, the response from the community was great, not only in Cumbria but across the whole of the north region.

“These operations show how we all work in partnership together, between the community and across our neighbouring borders, and we are all dedicated in tackling crime that affects our farmers and rural locations.”

Reporting suspicious behaviour is vital. Alerting the police early on to anything, or anyone, acting suspiciously in the community can help prevent and deter a crime from taking place. People can contact the police directly+ on 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Cumbria Community Messaging alerts residents to crimes and incidents in their area. There are approximately 1600 farmers signed up on the system, but there are many farmers who haven’t yet joined this communication system, or Farm Watch.

For more information about Cumbria Community Messaging and / or Farm Watch, visit www.cumbria.police.uk/ruralcrime or www.cumbriacommunitymessaging.co.uk

For more information about crime prevention, your can visit www.cumbria.police.uk/ruralcrime. Those who do not have access to the internet can ring Cumbria Police on 101 and speak to their local crime prevention officers, or police community support officers, who will be happy to help, for free!
