West Mercia HW and Equine Baliffs

Post by TracingEquines »

There have been numerous posts recently on Telford Horse Watch and Telford Horse Sales fb sites regarding the issue of horses seized by an equine bailiff and some queries over the involvement of Horse Watch and Police.

To clarify:
1) West Mercia Horse Watch are not associated with any Equine Bailiff Scheme.
2) West Mercia Horse Watch is not police owned, it is 'supported' by police.

3) West Mercia Police are part of a multi-agency agreement with an Equine Bailiff to recover loose horses when they pose a significant risk to the public when on or likely to be on the highway. Usually, motorists or members of the public call police to report loose horses. The Police Officers attendance at the scene is to close any roads, make the area safe, prevent any breach of the peace and give the powers for the animals to be seized if an owner cannot be immediately identified. The seizure is then made and the bailiff leaves contact details for an owner if they are later identified. The subsequent process of recovery is between the owner, the bailiff and the officer.

If you have any queries in respect of this you can contact your local police or Horse Watch who can pass on your concerns.
Please be mindful when taking part in social media posts that you keep within the law and don't make threats against persons, property or incite offences to be committed. Thankyou.

After much research and debate, I have finally sourced a Fetlock ID Band made of Nylon webbing. They are durable, visible and safe to use. Each band would be embroidered with WMHW and a UNIQUE REFERENCE NUMBER that will be registered to you and the details you supply. This will be held on a database that would be shared with police in order that if your horse is found loose, the number can be checked at the scene and will allow owners to be identified and contacted immediately. This would look to reunite horse and owner rather than utilising an equine bailiff who is often used when no owner can be identified.

Placement of the Fetlock ID band: You can place your Fetlock ID band on either the cannon bone (above the Fetlock) or on pastern of your equine. Safe to wear 24/7 with approximately 32lbs breakaway, double closure hook and loop, it can be worn during all types of activities without causing movement infringements.

Small: Mini's, ponies, small Arabians
Standard: Most all other breeds
XL/Draft: Most large breed horses/ drafts and draft X's

Advantages:
Secure Information
Safe
Reusable
No irritation
Versatile

Benefits:
Water Resistant
Quick release
Variety of uses
No hair loss

COST: Naturally these are not so cheap as the hospital type ID bands I originally sought to use. Based on the advantages and benefits listed above, these would be a far better solution and means of ID. I would most likely look to source sizes of Standard and XL and would be priced at £20 each. We are not making a profit on these - it is an Amercian company and prices are reduced already for us based on bulk purchase and there is also a cost to ship. We are looking at a timeframe of 8-12 weeks from placing the order.

Is this something that you feel would benefit you as members? The real benefit is having your unique number allocated against your details on a WMHW database accessible by police in times of need!

An idea of if these are worth it would be welcomed. Thanks all!

Have you registered your details with us on our FREE microchip / freeze mark database? Details you provide will be retained by West Mercia Horse Watch and shared with West Mercia Police for the purpose of identifying ownership in incidents such as loose, stray, stolen horses. See the website 'downloads' section for the form to complete and return. Don't be 'saddled' a victim..

Coming soon...!! Horse Watch is soon to launch 'Trailer Watch' as part of our scheme. Register your trailer / horsebox with the scheme and obtain a security skin that can be applied in a covert or overt location with your details contained, only visible under UV light. Officers carry UV torches as part of their equipment - if your horsebox / trailer is seen in suspicious circumstances or travelling at strange hours of the night, officers can make immediate checks by viewing the security skin and checking the database. Don't want to use UV? No problem, other marking options can be used. Further information available in due course.

HORSE WATCH NOW HAS A TRAILER WATCH SCHEME AVAILABLE FOR A £1.50 DONATION.

UPON RECEIPT OF REGISTRATION & DONATION YOU WILL BE ISSUED WITH A WEST MERCIA HORSE WATCH SECURITY SKIN THAT MEASURES 80 x 35 mm.

**Please note, if you wish WMHW to mark the skin for you with UV, please advise what details you require**

THIS IS A SIMPLE PRODUCT MADE OF A HIGH POLYMER MATERIAL THAT PROTECTS UV MARKINGS, YET SHOWS AN ELEMENT OF TAMPER AS THE SKINS FRAGMENT INTO TINY PIECES WHEN REMOVAL IS ATTEMPTED. THIS HELPS POLICE IDENTIFY POSSIBLE STOLEN ITEMS.

SIMPLY MARK THE CLEAR (UNUSED) AREA IN UV WITH ID NAMES, POSTCODE ETC. THEN PLACE YOUR SKIN WHERE YOU WANT IT ON THE TRAILER / HORSEBOX OR OTHER ITEM. THE UV MARKINGS ARE PROTECTED WITH THE SKINS, MAKING IT EVEN MORE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE, AND CAN BE CLEARLY SEEN USING UV TORCHES.

DON’T WANT TO USE UV? NO PROBLEM, MARK YOUR ITEM WITH YOUR CHOSEN PRODUCT (CREMARK FOR EXAMPLE) AND PLACE THE SKIN OVER THE TOP OF THE OVERT MARK TO PROTECT IT.

DOWNLOAD THE REGISTRATION FORM FROM OUR FB CLOSED GROUP POST ATTACHMENT OR SEE THE ‘DOWNLOAD’ SECTION ON THE WEBSITE SHORTLY.
