How To ..., Leg Yielding, School Rules & Transitions

Post by TracingEquines »

How To ...

... Walk
- have a contact on the reins, squeeze down inside rein to create the bend, squeeze with both legs
- squeeze with alternative legs to ask horse to walk more forward

... Trot
- shorten up reins having a contact, squeeze down inside rein to create the bend, squeeze horse's sides with both legs

Diagonals - To find out if you are on the correct diagonal in working trot rising you have to look at the outside shoulder and sit as it comes back and rise as it goes forward

... Canter
- shorten up reins having a contact, squeeze down inside rein to create the bend, draw back the outside leg, squeezing with the inside leg on girth
- to help the horse strike off on the correct leading leg it is best to ask for canter in a corner and to raise the inside hand

Leg Yielding

Feel on inside rein to create a little bend. Hold with the outside rein. Keep the outside leg on the girth. Push him over with the inside leg

Leg yielding on a circle
- all the aids the same as for leg yielding but more bend is needed

School Rules

Pass left to left

Walk on inner track, trot on outer track

If someone falls off -> HALT

If you're too close, circle away

If you need to cut across, cut the whole end of the school off

Open order transitions should be made on the centre line

Transitions

Halt to Walk
Even pressure with the inside of the calf
Urge the horse forwards with the seat
Use alternate legs
Use the inside leg as the inside hindleg is back

Walk to Halt
Brace through the back
Tighten the seat and keep both legs on
Take back gently with both hands

Walk to Trot
Same as walk but more exaggerated
To maintain, use both legs at the same time

Trot to Canter
Good working trot
Trot sitting before the corner and half halt
Outside leg back from hip and keep the inside leg on
Inside hind back both legs on and sit up straight

Canter to Trot
Brace back, tighten seat and half halt
Hands back, dont grip with the knee (more likely to fall off)
From circular hip movement to alternate
Riding goes against natural instinct

Trot to Walk
Same as above, but more gentle

Turning Right
Open right hand, allow with the left hand for bend
Inside leg on the girth, outside leg behind the girth
Horse should be bent round the inside leg, like a banana
Right shoulder back, left shoulder towards ear

Turning Left
The opposite of turning right
