Crime and policing update for farm and rural contacts

Recovery news

Officers recovered an industrial wood chipper from a location in Northampton this morning (30 November), thanks to a fitted security tracking device.

The tracker allowed officers to pin point the exact location and provide the identification needed to quickly and effectively reunite the stolen machine with its owner.

The success of locating the wood chipper also led to the discovery of an IFor Williams Trailer, which had recently been stolen from a location in Daventry. Although the thieves had stripped the trailer of its identification plates, the officers were able to identify and return it to the rightful owner due to a descriptive report of the trailer being provided when it was originally stolen.

Rural Officer Claire Salmon, one of the officers involved in the discoveries said: “Finding the wood chipper this morning has highlighted the value of fitting security products, such as a tracker, to expensive items. Without the tracker, it would have been quite difficult to locate the wood chipper.

“It has also shown the importance of how providing a greater level of detail about a stolen item, such as a unique marking, significantly improves the chances of it being recovered.”

Recent incident of note

Plant equipment, a vehicle and tools were stolen from a rural property in Chelveston on Monday 28 November.

Electrical fence items were stolen from a field in Byfield, Woodford between Sunday 27 and Monday 28 November.

Steel grain store laterals were stolen from a rural property in Lamport overnight Monday 28 November.

Anyone with information can call us on 101 or alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

News in brief

Gale force winds are forecast for much of Britain this week, and it is likely that Northamptonshire will feel some of the impact. High winds can cause disruption for motorists and householders alike and we are urging members of the public to take a common sense approach to dealing with these adverse weather conditions. Officers will be on hand to manage road closures around weather-related incidents and the fire service and the county's street doctor service are also anticipating a greater demand on their time. As yet, there is no Met Office severe weather warning in place for Northamptonshire and we will keep you updated if this situation changes.

Has anyone else experienced dumping of dirty stable straw in the middle of the road? We had a lot of it in the Raunds area last year and it has now started again. Please make sure you know where your stable straw is being taken to if you are paying somone to take it away. They're dumping it in the middle of the road and I nearly hit the pile of straw on my way home tonight. We could have all been killed!

More horse manure dumped today in Raunds again in the middle of the road causing a hazard I figure that if I post every time this happens then it may jog some memories. I do think that this could be a case of someone paying someone to take it away and the third party is resposnible for dumping it.

Operation Silver Fox is launched to assist in the detection of metal theft 09/12/2011 14:26:50

Operation Silver Fox is launched to assist in the detection of metal theft

Operation Silver Fox has been launched in a bid to prevent and detect metal thefts across the County.

Part of Operation Silver Fox includes targeting suspicious vehicles used to illegally transport metal to scrap dealers.

Operation Silver Fox is asking for your assistance to combat metal theft. You may not be aware, but anyone wishing to dispose of metal through the collection of it from their premise is required, in law, to complete a waste transfer note. Therefore anyone passing scrap metal onto a third party who is not registered, is potentially unknowingly, breaking the law.

Anyone who carries controlled waste, must register with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier and obtain a waste carriers certificate. Metal is included within the definition of controlled waste, and it is an offence to carry waste without this certificate and a waste transfer note.

If you are visited by persons wishing to collect scrap metal from your premises we ask that you assist the Operation by asking to see their waste carrier’s certificate. If you dispose of waste ensure you complete a waste transfer note.

In you have suspicions that the persons are operating illegally ring us immediately on the non-emergency police number 101, quote 'Op Silver Fox'. Helpful information would include a description of the suspicious individuals, date and time of their visit, vehicle and registration.
