Re: £25,000 tack theft, hampshire/sussex border

Again, referring to my prior report of £25,000 worth of saddlery being stolen 1 mile across the county border into Hampshire a member who is a Sussex Police Officer sent me the message below.

The offenders are going to want to move this lot quick.............

Wearing my Police hat I think it is important for people to be sure of the vender when buying second hand tack, there are so many outlets now on Facebook, eBay Friday Ad etc people need to be checking saddles for serial numbers or horsewatch markings, they need to ask the question as to 'where does it come from', the offence of handling stolen goods actually carries a greater sentence than theft (without buyers thieves would not make money out of their theft).

If you buy something, Knowing or believing it to be stolen you commit the offence of handling, remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Get receipts and pay a fair price, a £1000 saddle for £100 is not a reasonable price and could be deemed as handling, the BUYER is responsible for making checks,

Just because Christmas is the time for giving and RECEIVING don't get caught out.

Equine Crime

Between 1800 12/02/2015 and 1030 13/02/2015
Non dwelling burglary

A container in a field in the Eversley area has been broken into but nothing was taken and in the Kingsclere area a feed room at a stables was broken into, a quantity of horse feed, 34 bags of Spillers Layoff and 2 bags of Spillers Happy Hoof Chaff, was stolen.

This was a significant theft. The thieves obviously knew what they were after and went prepared. Two schools of thought - the thieves are close to the victim or they are travelling criminals who have done their homework and recce'd the area.

As a extra precaution post code your feed bags with indelible pen. It may help to identify stolen property.
