Shops charging for carrier bags

Email received from Sainsburys today

Bagless deliveries and Single Use Carrier Bag Charges legislation

We wanted to let you know that we’ve introduced our new bagless delivery service - so if you'd prefer, you can now choose to have your online shopping delivered to your home without plastic carrier bags. Simply select this option within the ‘Carrier bag preferences’ on the checkout page. There is no additional charge for having your groceries delivered without carrier bags.

If you'd still like to receive your groceries in plastic bags, you can do so currently for no extra charge however, we need to inform you that from 5 October 2015 the Single Use Carrier Bag Charges legislation comes into force in England. This means retailers with more than 250 employees are legally obliged to charge customers at least 5p for every single-use plastic bag.

As a result of this legislation, from 5 October 2015, we'll be introducing a 40p flat charge to all online grocery orders with carrier bags, to cover the levy on the carrier bags used in your delivery.

This is a compulsory fee that will be automatically added to your basket for deliveries on or after 5 October 2015, should you choose to receive your groceries in plastic bags. This charge will appear in your online trolley and on the receipt you receive with your shopping.

At Sainsbury's, we're committed to making a positive difference to our community and the environment, and therefore the proceeds from the 40p charge will be distributed to good causes in England as recommended by the legislation.

You can find more details about the legislation here ( http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015 ... tents/made ), and Government guidance on the charge here ( https://www.gov.uk/guidance/carrier-bag ... sibilities ). If you need any further information please go to our Help Centre ( http://help.sainsburys.co.uk/ ) or contact our customer care team on 0800 328 1700.

TESCO = The bag charge is coming...

Dear xxx,

As you may be aware, from Monday 5th October 2015, retailers in England will be required by law to charge a minimum of 5p per bag when customers use a new single use carrier bag. This will include single use carrier bags made from plastic, paper or natural materials. Proceeds from this will go to good causes locally and nationally, as voted for by you.

So that we comply at tesco.com, unless you choose a bagless delivery, there will be a charge of 40p per order for an online grocery delivery or collection. We've worked this out based on the average number of carrier bags needed to pack an order. You'll see the charge itemised on your delivery receipt as "Bag Charge".

If we all use fewer carrier bags we can:

Help tackle climate change
Reduce litter
Protect wildlife
Save the natural resources that are used to make and distribute bags

..... How can I avoid being charged?

You can avoid being charged by choosing the bagless option.

If you would like to amend a current order, please go to My Orders, select "Make a change to this order" then "Change delivery details", selecting a bagless delivery at the bottom of the delivery slots page. Don't forget to checkout your order again to save your changes. You can amend your order up until 11.45pm the night before your delivery.

Pre-packed raw poultry will still be placed into a small bag before being placed in the green tray. You won't be charged for these bags.

..... Will I still be charged for bags when I use the Click+Collect Groceries service?

In stores where Click+Collect Groceries is available, customers will be charged for bags unless the bagless collection is selected at checkout, as above. You will no longer be able to pick up bags at the Click+Collect collection point.

There is no charge for using your own carrier bags, but we won't be awarding green Clubcard points for doing this anymore.

..... Where will the money charged for bags go?

All of the proceeds will go to good causes locally and nationally, as voted for by you.
