Newsletter from The Long Riders' Guild

Post by TracingEquines »

December 2011

Dear Long Riders, Explorers, Scholars and Friends of The Guild,

We are pleased to report that new Members from a variety of countries continue to share news of their remarkable journeys. Notable examples are Mauricio Montenero and Rene Weber, who rode across central Afghanistan in 1977, and Esther Luxford-Matthews, who rode nearly 5,000 miles across Australia.

English Long Rider Christina Dodwell is to be honoured by the Spanish Geographical Association in recognition of her many journeys and books.

The Guild has been asked to help formulate an international Charter for Free Equestrian Travellers.

Research has confirmed that the famous English author, Somerset Maugham, was an avid Long Rider, who penned a book about his equestrian journey through Spain.

And astonishing new evidence connected to the “Deadly Equines” project continues to be uncovered, including an Australian horse who killed 100 sheep and an English horse who recently attacked small children in a Suffolk village.

Here then is the latest Long Rider news for your inspection and enjoyment.

Kind regards, and with our best wishes for 2012

Basha and CuChullaine O'Reilly FRGS

Long Riders' Guild Newsletter

Post by TracingEquines »

Dear Long Riders, Explorers, Scholars and Friends of the Guild,

After thirteen years of constant service, the Long Riders’ Guild website has been described as one of the pioneers of the equestrian internet age.

Housed and protected within this humble-looking site is the world’s largest source of equestrian travel wisdom, where thousands of pages document the history of mankind’s mounted travels.

Months of work have resulted in the website having undergone intensive internal improvement. Out of date material has been retired. Vital new sections have been created to further explain the principles and practices of the world’s equestrian explorers.

Because it is visited by readers from all parts of the world, many of whom do not use English as their primary language, the format remains easy to navigate and quick to use.

As always, this vital information is provided as a free public service.

Meanwhile, there has been a corresponding explosion of equestrian travel news from all parts of the globe.

Nearly 50 new Members have joined the Guild from various countries.

The Long Riders’ Guild has mentored or assisted more than 150 Equestrian Expeditions. Exciting new expeditions are about to set off, including the first ride across the length of Japan by the veteran New Zealand Long Rider Ian Robinson. Plus, many remarkable journeys have recently been completed, including German Long Rider Gunter Wamser who completed his epic 20,000 mile ride from Patagonia to Alaska.

During the twenty years since the Guild was formulated Long Riders have successfully journeyed across every continent except Antarctica. A new feature on the website explains which equestrian explorers have been entrusted to Carry the Long Rider’s Flag.

Because it is the job of the Guild to reassure the public that they can trust the word of a Long Rider, the Guild has published a strict set of Equestrian Ethics.

Testimonials have been gathered over the course of many years and now appear in a special collection. They cover a broad range of activities connected to the various activities of the Long Riders’ Guild, including exploration, ethics, spirituality, historical research, literature and social justice.

European News Coverage. The world’s first bi-lingual collection of equestrian travel articles has been published on the Guild website. They offer interviews with the world's leading equestrian explorers, information and images from expeditions around the world and never-before-seen extracts from the forthcoming Encyclopaedia of Equestrian Exploration. The stories are available in English and French.

A new collection of Stories from the Road has been released. It includes an alarming article entitled, “Nightmare at the Border,” wherein Long Rider Filipe Leite explains how crossing international boundaries has been the most difficult hazard during his epic 10,000 mile ride from Canada to Brazil.

The Guild began with five Members from three countries. Since then it has expanded to more than 40 countries and documented the journeys of hundreds of living equestrian travellers. Most of the Missing in Action Long Riders have been found. But the Guild has now expanded its search for MIA Long Riders to the Orient. Leading the list is the Chinese Long Rider Li Jing, who rode 9000 kilometres from Votkinsk, Russia to Beijing, China in 2009.

Two new editions of Tschiffely's Ride have been authorized and published in the United States and Great Britain.

After being inspired by Historical Long Rider Aimé Tschiffely, renowned Canadian artist Corb Lund has written and released a popular song entitled The Only Long Rider I Know.

The Guild has now identified and documented details of nearly a thousand Long Riders both past and present. Many important Historical Long Riders have been recently discovered, including Fynes Moryson the Englishman whose journeys in the 1590s resulted in some of the earliest written details about European equestrian travel.

Unfortunately the Guild’s Hall of Shame has grown with the inclusion of information regarding the activities of the English travellers who killed or wounded 81 horses in 49 days, the French travellers who starved their horses for 80 days in the Arctic Circle, the Hungarians whose horses were confiscated by the police and the Americans who were convicted of 21 counts of abusing their horses.

It saddens us to report the loss of several of the Guild’s mounted heroes, including Steve O'Connor, who made the first modern ride to all four corners of Ireland and George Patterson, who made a legendary ride over the Himalayas during the winter of 1949.

Here then is the latest Long Rider news for your inspection and enjoyment.
