(Stolen) Star, 14hh, dark bay mare - Cawthorne

Mystery as 34-year-old Star disappears at night

THIEVES have stolen a 34-year-old horse from a South Yorkshire animal sanctuary - leaving other animals pining for her and volunteers who care for her in tears.
Star - a dark bay mare who has a white star on her forehead - disappeared from Albert's Horse Sanctuary, near Cawthorne, Barnsley, in the middle of the night.

Mary Hepworth, who set up the sanctuary with her own money, said: "She is an old lady who is currently on medication and a special diet and we are very concerned for her well-being.

"The other old horses who she shares a field with are all missing her. They are pining and we cannot understand why anyone would steal an elderly sick horse."

Mary says in recent weeks Star, who is 14 hands high and has one white sock as well as her distinctive white star, has been losing weight - which is why she is on regular medication and on a special diet.

"We are still waiting for the results from the blood tests taken by the vet so we don't know what her medical problem is - but she certainly is only going to get worse without the special diet and medication," she said

"She came to us because she was getting on in years. She needed a nice quiet life, being in the field with other older horses.

"We have no idea why she has been taken, where she is being kept or what the conditions are and that causes us to worry.

"I would appeal to anyone who has taken her, for whatever motive to please bring her back. She deserves to be where she is happy and looked after and certainly doesn't need the trauma of being transported away and kept somewhere else.

"She deserves to be allowed to spend the remainder of her life where she is cared for and where she is happy."
