Editor's Note

Electric fencing and energising units are naturally vulnerable to theft due to the remote location they are frequently used

If you are not using the unit and fencing for sometime, e.g over the winter months, remove it all and store in a secure place.

At very least you should mark your energiser unit with your postcode by either engraving or using an indelible marker pen or paint.

It is possible to purchase a specialist box, which may be locked and electrified. To deter vandals and opportunistic thieves, the box can be connected to the energiser, making the energiser box itself live. Access to the box is gained using an insulated key, so you don't have to give yourself a shock every time you wish to open it

Editors note:

A belated happy new year to our members and it is fantastic to be able to start off this bulletin with
some good news.

Early December last year I reported on the theft of ‘Cookie’ a 12.2hh bright bay pony from the west
of the county, the little mare is now home safe. As you can imagine her owner and young handler
are over the moon. The return of ‘Cookie’ to her owners is thanks to her being microchipped;
without this important identifying feature they might never have been reunited as her appearance
had been altered in the weeks she was missing.

A big thank you goes out to everyone involved who helped get ‘Cookie’ home.

If you are an owner of an equine, if you have not already done so could I please urge you to
consider getting your animal microchipped and / or freezemarked. The moral of this tale is
it really does work.

A couple of week ago I also reported on the theft of ‘Rosie’ a coloured cob from Lincolnshire. It’s
also good to report that ‘Rosie’ is also home, being found by her owners some ten miles away.

Thankfully there was little equestrian related crime reported to us over Christmas and the New
Year period, however it would appear thieves have returned to ‘work’ after the holidays and thefts
of power tools, gardening equipment, fuel (both farm (red diesel) and domestic heating), metals
and vehicle batteries feature on our reports. Whilst equestrian equipment may not be on the
perpetrators list of things to steal, it is possible they will take such whilst stealing their sought-after
items.

If you have any scrap metal or vehicle batteries hanging around your yard, take it to a scrap metal
merchant. Not only will this make some money for your self but it will also reduce the risk of
someone helping themselves and giving them the opportunity to snoop around your property and
see what else is worth taking.

To reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft, make sure your property is well secured and
marked so it is identifiable. Time after time theft of property is reported to us, but the owner is
unable to give us any serial numbers or identifying features of the items. Keep a note of the serial
numbers etc in a safe place or even better record it on Immobilise - a police approved FREE
database for any type of identifiable property. Visit www.immobilise.com for more details.

Editors note:

Just when we thought we were having a mild winter the weather has hit us with vengeance!
Until recently I have been able to keep my pony’s rugs locked up safe in my tack room as it’s been
so mild she’s not needed to wear them, however over the last few days I’ve taken pity on her and
she’s now cosy in her duvet.

Sadly, it’s not just the weather that is foul, but there are some rather foul people around who will
quite happily thieve the rugs off our horses’ backs without a second thought of the poor animals’
welfare. There have been a myriad of such thefts recently reported from the Horse Watch groups
across the country.

In most cases none of the rugs were marked as identifiable. Unless there is some form of positive
ID nothing can be done to repatriate your belongings if they are recovered. Rug theft is on the rise
across the UK, so please deter the thief, MARK THEM.

Rugs are not cheap, even the cheapest is over £40 and can cost £200+. Most equine insurance
policies won’t cover rugs, so the theft of them could prove very expensive, also at this time of the
year the most popular sizes will be sold out and you could well have problems replacing them.

The UK Horse Watch Alliance has produced a very useful advice sheet on how to mark your rugs -
see the additional document attachment to this e-mail bulletin. If you would like a print out of the
advice sheet, please contact me via the e-mail or phone number at the top of this bulletin
