Thieves target Mountains Animal Sanctuary near Forfar

Thieves have targeted one of Scotland's largest rescue centres for horses, ponies and donkeys.

Tayside Police are investigating a break-in at the Mountains Animal Sanctuary, near Forfar, sometime between 21:30 on Sunday, 9 December and Monday, 10 December.

Mountains said:

We were all so saddened this morning to come in to discover that we had been burgled. Our staffroom, Office, and Visitor Centre were all broken into. All the money we raised at our Nativity Concert was taken as was our unique much loved carved horse, Milton, we used for our Armistice Service (see picture below). Much of our stock from the visitors centre was taken and the most difficult part for us to get our heads round was the fact that they put the plugs in all the sinks in the visitors centre and left the taps running.....who would do this to us two weeks before Christmas?

Also taken were various Oriele (Philip Turner) bronze animal sculptures, Manuka Honey products, chocolates and many other gift items.

There have been 2 recent incidents I would like to draw to your attention.

The first is the attempted theft of 2 quad bikes at a farm in the Parbroath area where two padlocks were overcome giving access to 2 quad bikes that were pushed a distance before being abandoned and subsequently discovered by a member of staff.

The second is 2 males disturbed attempting to remove the plastic wheelarch trim from the front of a Ford Transit van in the Luthrie area.

It may be the time spent overcoming the security around the quad bikes delayed the thieves long enough that they abandoned their attempts. However I would advise that padlocks be of a high standard, designed to limit access for bolt cutters and where possible protected by steel covers only allowing access to lock/unlock the padlock.

Once again reports have been received about unscrupulous individuals who advertise for companion horses or take on loan horses but then sell the horses as their own and provide false details about the horse's true condition.

If you decide to move your horse on make sure you know who it is you are passing on ownership/guardianship to.

Check out the person as best you can, visit their address, livery yard.....perhaps take photographs, vehicle registration numbers. In all cases get the arrangement documented and witnessed.
