Freezemarking Information from Premier Equimark

Post by TracingEquines »

Premier Equimark have taken over the freezemarking side of Farmkey.
Farmkey still do the admin/database side of things

If you are interested in having your horse freeze-marked and are in Hertfordshire, Kent, Essex or home counties, please contact Jenny Fitzgerald on freezemarking@yahoo.co.uk
All other areas please contact Alison Duffield (based in Mid Wales) on freezemarking@premierequimark.co.uk

FREEZE MARKING

SUITABLE MARKING FACILITIES

It is important that the freeze marking process runs smoothly, hence the importance of suitable handling facilities:-
A stable or an enclosed area should be available for the technician to work in.
An experienced person should be available to hold the horse ( this does not need to be the owner ) just some-one who is competent.
The horse should be dry and clean to enable the smooth use of clippers.
It is helpful to have some feed or treats available to use as a treat while marking is happening.
Please note that the technician may stop the process at any time if they feel the safety of any person or horse involved may be at risk.

THE POSITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE FREEZE MARK

The position of the freeze mark on the horse may vary, however a firm well fleshed area is preferred, such as under the saddle or on the shoulder. On dark coloured horses the marking process causes the pigment producing cells of the hair follicle to be destroyed, causing the hair to grow back white. On light coloured horses the process is longer as the area needs to be bald, so the irons are placed on for longer. Bald marks are not placed directly under the saddle due to the risk of rubbing from a saddle.

A frozen impression can be seen on the skin which disappears in about 1-2 minutes as the skin thaws. The skin area will then swell up which takes about 20 minutes and lasts for about 48 hours. Dry scabs form in 2-3 weeks which will come away as new skin and hair grows back. There is no break in the skin, so horses can get wet, dirty or muddy without risk, and can wear a rug immediately after marking. No cream or oil should be applied to the marks after marking.

LAY OFF PERIOD
We recommend 4-7 days off riding when marked on the saddle and 2-3 days if marked anywhere else. After that period it is recommended that a natural fibre numnah be used when riding until the hair has grown back if marked on the saddle. More advice is available from the operator on the day.

BACK UP SERVICE

Members can make use of the 24 hour 365 day a year provided by Farmkey, should the worst happen and their horse is lost or strays. The full details of over 200,000 horses are held on their database and can be accessed to aid recovery of a stolen animal. Their nationwide network of equine contacts is so extensive that over 90% of all freezemarked stolen horses are returned to their owners safe and sound. If the worst happens they will circulate full details and a colour poster nationally to all police contacts, auctioneers, slaughter houses, ports, horsewatch groups and other organizations in the equine world.

They offer up to £5000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the thief of a freeze marked horse. They will pay up to £150 to help towards the transport costs of returning a stolen freeze marked horse. They have their own dedicated website for finding stolen horses called the Stolen Horse Register which registers the details of missing horses from all over the UK and Europe. They also have the unique LOC8 text message service which alerts members when a horse has been stolen.

PERSONAL MARKS.

Personal marks are available in 3 different ways for those who wish to make their freeze mark a little more unique and personal to them.

We have 2 new brands available which are a heart and a star. These can be used in combination with letters, numbers, a mix of both or even with the micro mark, which is the little horse shoe (available only to horses which are micro chipped), up to 4 digits, like,
ST*R, P♥NY, or AMY♥

If you prefer not to use the 2 new shapes, if your horse is already micro- chipped you can use the micro mark together with letters, numbers or both, up to 4 digits. It can be used just as the horseshoe symbol, or can be used in a word, for example,

PAM

If your horse is not chipped and you don’t want to use 1 of the new symbols, you can have a personal mark using 3 letters and a number, for example,

ABC1, 7JAN or SP0T.

ALL personal numbers must be booked in advance with the technician or the office prior to marking as all marks even personal ones are unique.

The cost for a personal number is £20 payable on the day to the technician.

The micro mark, star and heart marks are available to be placed with existing freeze marks if required price on application.
